How to Safely Choose a Cosmetic Surgeon

So you have decided there’s no reason to continue on with the hand that nature dealt you, and you’re looking for some liposuction or maybe a tummy tuck to put the finishing touches on nature’s artwork. If you’ve been doing any research online, you already know that cosmetic surgery can be a risky endeavor if you’re not careful. As the popularity of cosmetic surgery rises, it’s become ever-more important to to properly research doctors and evaluate surgical facilities. Here are a few questions to ask to ensure that your doctor is a highly skilled professional.

Is the doctor board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgeons?

This is of critical importance because legally any doctor can perform any procedure. Board certification requires that the doctor has completed three to five years of training in general surgery and at least two to three years in plastic surgery.

To determine whether a physician is board certified, check with The American Board of Plastic Surgeons.

Is the surgical facility accredited?

A surgeon can operate either in a hospital or an independent facility. It’s important to make sure that whatever facility your procedure is scheduled to take place in is accredited by an independent organization. This accreditation ensures that basic operating requirements are met and standards for staffing, licensing and equipment are up to snuff.

To determine that the facility is fully accredited, you can contact the American Association for Ambulatory Healthcare.

Are the surgical staff knowledgeable?

It’s important to know who will be assisting with your surgery. Is the anesthesiologist board certified? Are the staff experienced in cosmetic procedures? Proper staff training is an important part of ensuring the safety of your procedure.

To determine that your surgeon or anesthesiologist is qualified to provide general anesthesia, you may contact the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Is the surgeon experienced in your particular procedure?

Look for surgeons with prior experience in the procedure you are considering. Not all surgeons are the same, and experience makes a difference. Ask your surgeon about their past experience and request before and after pictures, how many years they have been in business, and the number of procedures they have performed.

Any surgery should be taken seriously, as it’s not just the results that are important but also the actual procedure. Anesthesia, sanitary conditions and a skilled hand are just a few of the important areas that necessitate proper research.
